Guys’ weekend

May 23, 2010

Had a couple of old friends from college visit last weekend. Here’s the rundown of events:

Friday, 5/14/10 – Friend #1 arrived and we took a walk along Mission Creek. Later, we had beers at Public House and then it was off to Marlowe for dinner.

Saturday, 5/15/10 – Picked up friend #2. Headed over to Cliff House for breakfast. Then made our way to watch the Giants/Astros game.

That night we had dinner in North Beach at Iluna Basque.

Sunday, 5/16/10 – We checked out the weirdness of Bay to Breakers Marathon.

Next, we shot some hoops, cleaned up and made our way to Sonoma, checking out Cline and then some bubbly at Gloria Ferrer.

We had lunch at El Dorado Kitchen in Sonoma and then more wine tasting at Gundlach Bundschu and Chateau St. Jean. Made our way down the Pacific Coast to bring our friend back to SFO. Made a stop at In-N-Out on the way home.

Monday, 5/17/10 – Rainy day but we still did a cable car ride and wandered around Fisherman’s Wharf. Had fish and chips at Fog Harbor and saw the sea lions at Pier 39.

Saturday, 5.1.10 – Went to AT&T for the Giants/Rockies game.

Sunday, 5.2.10 – Met up with another couple at Serpentine for brunch.

Weekend Getaway – Part 2

April 28, 2010

The next day we got up and walked around the grounds of the Bodega Bay Lodge.

Then we got in the car and headed toward Point Reyes Station. There we checked out the Cowgirl Creamery

…and the delicious goodness of the morning bun and chocolate croissant at Bovine Bakery.

And then it was on our way to Point Reyes National Park. There, we saw some cows…

And got to see some great views of beach, ocean, etc.

And got to see the Point Reyes Lighthouse

And we saw lots o’ seals before heading back on the road and driving down the Pacific Coast Highway.

Weekend Getaway

April 27, 2010

We started out at the Kendall-Jackson winery where we opted for the wine and food pairing. First, they brought out all the wine.

Actually, first we had a glass of sauvignon blanc while we waited for them to set up. Once seated, they explained how it would work – moving from left to right. The 1st pairing was the grilled fava pods with meyer lemon and estate olive oil with the 2008 Grand Reserve Sauvignon Blanc.

Next was the 2007 Highland Estates Camelot Highlands Chardonnay with the Pumpkin Johnny Cake with Tsar Nicoulai Trout Roe and Creme Fraiche (Pictured above on right).

For the next pairing, we had the buckwheat crepe with smoked ham hocks and belwether farms caromody cheese (Pictured below on far left) along with a 2006 Highland Estates Seco Highlands Pinot Noir.

Next was the 2006 Highland Estates Alisos Hills Syrah with Sweet Tea Brined Kurobuta Pork Belly Slider with Syrah BBQ Sauce (Pictured above, middle). And finally, the Korean Style Kobe Beef Lettuce Wrap (Pictured above, far right) with the 2005 Highland Estates Trace Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon.

For dessert, they poured a 2006 Late Harvest Chardonnay and a 2007 Late Harvest Riesling and paired them with Mama Frischkorn’s Caramel Corn and Arborio Rice Milk Panna Cotta with Blood Orange Curd and Marinated Citrus, respectively.

In between they also poured us another type of Pinot Noir and Riesling so all in all we got to try about 10 different kinds of wine. The service was attentive and friendly and the food was really good too. We highly recommend it.

After KJ, we drove to the town of Healdsburg, where we strolled around the town square and made a stop at Barndiva. It’s got a great space and good food.

I had the beef sliders…

While my wife had the quiche…

Next, we drove through the Russian River Valley and made a couple more stops, first at Gary Farrell winery.

Then for some bubbly at Korbel….

Finally, we ended Saturday with a drive down the coast and to Bodega Bay where we stayed for the night, having dinner at the local Duck Club.

Where I’ve Been – Boozy Goodness Edition

April 27, 2010

Monday, 4.19.10 – Met up with friend at Four Seasons. Had drink. Proceeded to a networking event for ad:Tech. Lots of dorky looking white guys there. Apparently “Craig” of Craigslist was in attendance. SF celebs are a little different than the ones in NYC. 🙂

Wednesday, 4.21.10 – Brooklyn-ish restaurant Serpentine, you are good. Had the Prather Ranch Cheeseburger and an Acadian to wash it down with (rye whiskey, absinthe, gin, honey, lemon and rosemary).

Thursday, 4.22.10 – Drinks with co-workers to watch NFL Draft.

So I’ve Read

April 19, 2010

New York MagazineValidating what I felt from 3.5 years of living there – the magazine declares Park Slope as the most livable NYC neighborhood.

Also in the issue, we learn about the hipster vs. Hasid battle in Williamsburg.

And, there’s that branding of a new neighborhood – NoMad.

Where I’ve Been

April 17, 2010

Monday, 4.12.10 – Walked a couple blocks to AT&T for Giants/Pirates. 1st game (of probably many) of the season.

Wednesday, 4.14.10 – Fell into some tickets to the corporate suite for a midday game between Giants/Pirates so I was back at AT&T.

Saturday, 4.17.10 – Went to the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market. Got some coffee from Blue Bottle, which wasn’t all that despite the hype, long lines and long wait. Had a pretty decent breakfast from the Rose Pistola stand. Afterwards, we drove to Fort Funston to walk our dog and have an afternoon picnic.

In the evening we met up with a friend at Public House for drinks.

Where I’ve Been

Tuesday4/6/10 – Met up with wife and old friend from Chicago for happy hour Bacar. Afterwards, we had bite to eat at Marlowe, which gets even more street cred with others noticing its tasty burger.

Thursday – 4/8/10 – Worked in city and met up with wife for sangria/cheese plate/gambas at B44. Went to Solstice to meet up with friends. Drank too much. Paid for it the next day.

Where I’ve Been

April 3, 2010

Saturday, 4/3/10 – We decided to explore Noe Valley and it definitely reminded me of our old hood Park Slope. Had an unimpressive breakfast at Savor but still enjoyed checking out the neighborhood.

Later in the day we checked out the new restaurants in our hood – Mijita and Public House – located in AT&T Park. We tried Mijita’s jalapeno poppers which were crazy hot and their chips and guac. I washed it down with some Bear Republic IPA and Firestone Walker Pale Ale along with a lamb meatball sandwich, pulled pork sliders and fries. The food was overpriced (though not a total surprise for a ballpark restaurant) but the selection of draft, cask and bottled beer is impressive and Public House and Mijita are nice additions to the neighborhood.
