Where I’ve Been

February 28, 2010

2/17/10-2/20/10 – Flew to Chicago and interviewed 26 MBA candidates over 2 days for a summer internship. It was nice to be back in Chicago but I certainly don’t miss that weather. When “sunny and 30 degrees” is considered a step up, there is something wrong. I ended up getting bumped from my Friday night flight so they put me up at a hotel near O’Hare where I drowned my frustrations in some Goose Island at a nearby restaurant.

Friday, 2/26/10 – We’re still not happy that South is gone but there ain’t a lot of options here in SoMA so we checked out its replacement, Marlowe. Though the menu from South was more interesting, the meals at Marlowe were well executed. We enjoyed the spiced prawns to start while my wife had the lamb mixed grill and I had the steak frites.

Saturday, 2/27/10 – Did some shopping at Embarcadero Center, grabbed lunch at Gordon Biersch brewery, and took the dog to the dog park.

Valentine’s Day in Sonoma

February 15, 2010

We decided to head out to Sonoma yesterday. Started off with brunch at The Girl and the Fig. My wife had the stuffed brioche french toast.

I had the duck confit and potato hash with poached eggs and applewood smoked bacon.

Washed it down with a fig royale – sparkling wine with fig liqueur.

Afterwards, we went next door to Roche Winery where we did a tasting and picked up a bottle of their Stainless Steel Chardonnay.

Next up, we took a walk around the town square, then jumped in the car and made our way to the Kunde Estate.

They have a nice setting and after doing their tasting, walked away with a bottle of their Gewurztraminer and some Port.

We also did a quick tour of their wine caves, snapping the photo above.

Next up was Chateau St. Jean which had really scenic grounds…

It just so happened they were having their annual sale so picked up some Pinot Noir and their Estate Merlot.

After wine tasting, we stopped off for some quick shopping in San Rafael and then had to make a pit stop in Mill Valley for some In N Out.

Where I’ve Been

Monday, 2/8/10 – Met up with friends at Destino and had my 1st Pisco Sour (and subsequently, a 2nd).

Saturday, 2/13/10 – We explored the Castro neighborhood and were happy to see signs of spring, including some cherry blossoms that reminded us of Brooklyn.

It was fun exploring a new neighborhood and we ended up getting some brunch at Catch, where I had the soft-shell crab sandwich while my wife had the mussels. We washed it down with a Bloody Mary.

Afterwards, we walked down Market St. and onto Castro St., stopping in shops like Best in Show, A.G. Ferrari, and Body.

Where I’ve Been

Tuesday, 1/26/10 – Caught up with a friend from Chicago at Hotel Nikko‘s bar and had a couple Old Fashioneds.

Wednesday, 1/27/10 – Bro-in-law stops by for a visit. Nice to see him!

Thursday, 1/28/10 – Work happy hour in the ‘burbs at the unfortunately named BJ’s.

Saturday, 1/30/10 – We walked around Cow Hollow. Had some cream puffs at Pacific Puffs, saw the Secret Flower Garden, and had lunch at Betelnut.

Thursday, 2/4/10 – Tried out Absinthe in Hayes Valley. Really enjoyed the slow cooked pork confit with house made bacon, collard greens, and grits. Mmm.

Saturday, 2/6/10 – Had brunch at Yank Sing. Our faves included: shanghai dumplings, peking duck, steamed pork buns, pistachio ice cream pie.

Sunday, 2/7/10 – Checked out the suburb of Burlingame as a possible future place to settle. It was nice, with the downtown reminding us of Westfield, NJ. Proceeded to spend too much at Whole Foods and then went home.
